Lesson 6: Moses 1:1–23

Monday’s Lesson,

I AM A CHILD OF GOD: SATAN, GET THE HENCE!

Today we reviewed several parts of the first chapter of the book of Moses. As we studied together as a class, we uncovered who we are. Like Moses, we are sons and daughters of an Almighty God who lives in Heaven.

We learned each of us is of great worth and value to the Lord (and the advisory). We also learned we inherit attributes of our Father in Heaven just as we do our earthy parents. One of which is the ability to overcome and resist the temptations of the devil.

In the first few verses of the first chapter of Moses we learn he saw God (literally) face-to-face. God tells Moses, he is His son and a similitude to the Only Begotten. Moses learns about his role and purpose on earth. He comes to understand many things including the importance of understanding who we are as children of God.

After Moses’s encounter we the Lord, he encounters Satan as well. Having just been in the presence of the one true God, Moses easily identifies Satan for who he really is. He commands the devil to leave. Satan of course is none too thrilled to go as he knows just how important Moses is and what a priceless soul he would be to win. In spite of Satan’s persistence, Moses continues to command the advisory to depart until Satan finally gives up.

We likened this lesson to the daily temptations we face. As we begin to better understand who we are and the value we possess in the eyes of the Lord (not to mention Satan) we can overcome all things. We are important.

Dieter F. Uchtdorf said this, “You are something divine—more beautiful and glorious than you can possibly imagine. This knowledge changes everything. It changes your present. It can change your future. And it can change the world. …
“Because of the revealed word of a merciful God, you have felt the eternal glory of that divine spirit within you. You are no ordinary beings, my beloved young friends all around the world. You are glorious and eternal. …

“It is my prayer and blessing that when you look at your reflection, you will be able to see beyond imperfections and self-doubts and recognize who you truly are: glorious sons and daughters of the Almighty God” (“The Reflection in the Water” [Church Educational System fireside for young adults, Nov. 1, 2009]; LDS.org).

Satan tries to tell us every day, that we are of no value and the Atonement does not apply to us in our lives. Satan will lie to us in order to tear us down. As we study the gospel and follow the Lord’s plan of happiness, we will be able to more fully recognize the advisory for who he really is. We will gain divine strength, enough so we can command Satan to GET THE HENCE.

I know this to be true. I have seen this in my own life and in the lives of others. Spiritual strength come from God and the earnest efforts we make to do our very best every day.

In Jesus name ~ Amen

First Friday: August

Friday was a fun day…

Today we kind of more or less goofed off. We played the game Heads Up to help us with our scripture mastery. However, I don’t think the students really understood how to play it – or maybe I didn’t explain it well enough.

We are still struggling as a class to sing our hymns in the morning as part of our devotional. I am not sure how to remedy that. No one has stepped up to play the piano for us. My guess is that is part of the problem regarding the lack of singing.

Monday will be a more structured day as we begin to explore the Old Testament more thoroughly. It will also mark the first week we have a class president. I have selected Christine as our CP for week two. She will be responsible for conducting the morning devotionals by making assignments for the opening prayer, calling on a student to review their scripture reading, assigning hymns, a pianist and chorister, as well as someone to give the closing prayer. She will also teach the class on Wednesday.

Things are about to get very interesting…
Have a great weekend ~ Brother Morris

Lesson 4: Studying the Scriptures

Lesson 4: Studying the Scriptures

Today we reviewed the importance of studying the scriptures. We learned when we study the scriptures…

  • They will help us learn to respect God
  •  They will help us be successful
  • They will light our path
  • They will tell us what to do
  • They will heal our wounded soul
  • They will help us choose the right

“[The scriptures] can become stalwart friends that are not limited by geography or calendar. They are always available when needed. … Learning, pondering, searching, and memorizing scriptures is like filling a filing cabinet with friends, values, and truths that can be called upon anytime, anywhere in the world. …

“… [Memorizing a scripture] is like discovering a new individual who can help in time of need, give inspiration and comfort, and be a source of motivation for needed change” (“The Power of Scripture,” Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, 6).

Students and teachers should read and study the entire book of scripture that corresponds with each course of study. Elder David A. Bednar said:

“Reading a book of scripture from beginning to end … [introduces] us to important stories, gospel doctrines, and timeless principles. This approach also enables us to learn about major characters in the scriptures and the sequence, timing, and context of events and teachings” (“A Reservoir of Living Water” [Church Educational System fireside, Feb. 4, 2007], 2; si.lds.org).
