Lesson 14: Moses 6:48-68

Summary of Two Lessons

As a parent I continue to see things from a certain perspective; noticing how much instruction is
given to parents in the book of Moses. Adam and Eve were our first examples of a husband and wife rearing their children in gospel light. They were instructed to teach their children good from evil and to love God. Again and again, the book of Moses shows us how they did this and what exactly they were teaching. It also is a reminder that we are agents unto ourselves and no matter how much we teach our children, they still have the ability and inherit right to choice for themselves.

Cain for example was not born a bad person. He was born into a good family, taught right from wrong and to love his Father in Heaven. However, Cain made choices of his own will to follow Satan. He was consumed by the lies Satan told him and became convinced he had it all figured out. In spite of Cain’s carnal nature, Heavenly Father still reached out to Cain instructing him to repent. It was only when Cain reject God’s will that we was cursed.

Adam and Even continued to have children and raise them according to the commandment of the Lord. They taught their children the plan of salvation including the consequences of The Fall and the importance of being baptized.

Because of The Fall we leave God’s presence, come to the earth, receive physical bodies, experience sorrow, and suffer both physical and spiritual death.

Satan dwelled amongst men and taught them to love him. He persuades his followers to indulge in their carnal, sensual and devilish selves (see Moses 6:49). When we do these things, we are cut off from the presence of God (see D&C 20:20). Because the Holy Ghost cannot be our constant companion when we are acting in unclean ways, we are shut out from His company.

Our fallen condition effects our relationship with God (see Moses 6:50-52 and Mosiah 3:19). When we give into our carnal selves we are allowing ourselves to become an enemy to God. But when we head His voice and follow his commandments becoming as little children we can obtain companionship of the Holy Ghost and be brought back into the presence of the Lord.

If we believe, repent, and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, then we will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Adam asked God why this we must be baptized, (see Moses 6:53) and God answers, (see Moses 6:54-57).

We must be born again in order to be sanctified from all sin and to inherit eternal life. This requires water, spirit, and blood, (See Moses 6:59-61). Justified means to be pardoned from punishment for sin and declared guiltless. To be sanctified means to be free from sin, pure, clean and holy through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

We can know when we are being purified through the Atonement of Jesus Christ when the Holy Ghost rest upon us as our constant companion.

I feel the effects of the Atonement everyday as I strive to repent and be a better person. The Holy Ghost is constantly guiding me to choose the right even when I make mistakes. I know these things because someone invited me to learn these truth for myself. Someone invited me to attend a church meeting and introduced me to the missionaries. I have a testimony of the gospel because someone challenged me to seek out these things for myself. I invite you to give someone the same opportunity. As you develop your own testimony and understanding – share it with others and invite them to “come and see.”

Lesson 12: Moses 512-59 (Genesis 4)

Welcome back everyone. I hope you enjoyed the three day weekend.

Today we reviewed a lot and perhaps I took some liberties in emphasizing some of the lesson’s main points by spending more time than I had to cover all the topics.

The main point of today’s lesson is that parents are to teach their children right from wrong and to love God. Satan will sometimes tempt us to follow him and from time to time we may find ourselves giving into those temptations. But, never forget the Holy Ghost is always calling unto us to repent and change our ways. The Lord does not forget his children, even when we chose to forget Him.

As we learned about Cain and Abel, we learned Cain was not born a bad guy. In fact, he was brought up in a wholesome home with parents kind and dear (Adam & Eve). Cain knew right from wrong and was taught to love the Lord God, but allowed himself to be deceived by the devil even unto becoming a son of perdition. Cain lost his way and became so caught up in his wrong doings; so much so he couldn’t foresee or care about the consequences of his actions.

Sometimes good people get caught in bad situations by making poor choices. We can overcome the consequences of our actions as we repent and change. Heavenly Father has provided us with a Savior to make it so. No matter the predicament, we can repent. We can change. We can follow the path our parents taught us to follow. We can find love for God and He will always love us.

Lesson 8: Moses 2 (Genesis 1; Abraham 4)

A Student Lead Class

What a wonderful day. We had two of our students lead the class and teach the lesson as outlined in the teacher’s manual. Our class president Christine and VP Kalo disused the creation as found in Moses, Genesis and Abraham. They did an excellent job.

In addition to reviewing the creation, we learned more about our identities as sons and daughters of our Father in Heaven. We learned gender is essential to our beings and that God does not make mistakes.

Each time we take a look at ourselves in a mirror, we catch a glimpse of our Heavenly Father. As his children we possess divine similarities. Just as we resemble our earthly families; we also resemble our pre-mortal families.

A common theme this week has been identifying who we are. Understanding our role and responsibilities as well as the eternal truths or principles associated with them.

We are children of God. We can overcome all temptations of the world. We have a purpose. Our purpose if to fulfill God’s purpose. His purpose is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. We do this by developing a testimony of the gospel and then sharing it with others.

The seminary objective is to help youth and young adults understand and rely on the teachings and Atonement of Jesus Christ, qualify for the blessings of the temple, and prepare themselves, their families, and others for eternal life with their Father in Heaven.

I know my redeemer lives. I know we have a living prophet on the earth. God is real. I am, as are you his child. We have a purpose on this earth. We can overcome all things through the Lord. The gospel is true. The Book of Mormon is of divine origin and is another testament of Jesus Christ. Immortality and eternal life is available to everyone who seeks it out in earnest. These things I know in Jesus name ~ Amen.
